Annie Laurie, Variations for cornet and piano
Wilfred Heaton composed his Variations on Annie Laurie in the 1930s, originally for cornet and piano. He was an admirer of the music of Erik Leidzen and the influence of the Swedish-American composer can be detected in the easy flow of the music. Heaton subsequently made three versions of the work with brass band accompaniment.
After a dramatic opening, the music takes the soloist on a white-knuckle ride of virtuosity in three contraasting variations.
